Its not a single Monster but I think that part of why they're designed so well The Star Spawn.Ī group of creatures spanning from low level grunts similar to Goblins and Kobolds all the way up a Mythic Creature that's on par with Adult and Ancient Dragons. This makes her an excellent recurring villain (from a mechanical standpoint you can easily give this statblock to a different powerful mage or archfey or whatever else) who schemes against the party until they ultimately manage to pin her down for a final confrontation.īut what about you? What's your favourite monster statblock in the whole of 5e? Teleport, the Amulet of the Plains, and even the humble Fey Step give you a great chance of escaping if combat is going badly without having to resort to DM narrative power, which could feel railroady. Naturally counterplay exists, and at high optimisation levels it becomes a game of "can you stop Wish into Mirage Arcane from going off or not", but at that point most fights turn into rocket tag anyway.įinally, my favourite element of Iggwilv's statblock is her excellent escape mechanisms. If operating with an unoptimised high level party you can focus on stuff like Abyssal Rift, Telekinesis, Tasha's Hideous DLaughter, teleporting around with Fey Step, annoying the martials with Dark Speech, and it will be a fun boss fight.Īt mid-optimisation levels you can bring out the big guns, like Maze to deal with the Paladin's aura, Fey Beguilement to turn the Druid and their conjured animals against the rest of the party, and of course dodging multiple counterspells becomes more important than ever. Negate Spell, which isn't itself a spell and can't be countered, helps ensure that she doesn't get nuked by casters too easily, and Fey Step as a legendary action allows her to get out of Counterspell range more easily before dropping her own key spells. I won't go into too much detail, but between spells and other abilities she can target any mental stat she wants with her crowd control and, with her massive 27 Intelligence, you can bet she'll know what your weakest save is. She was blessed with a disparate arsenal of features that make efficient use of her action economy and work in concert to provide a fair challenge (or, if you so desire, a deadly threat) to just about any high level party, even fairly optimised ones. Why her, of all things? Because of her scalability. The Nilbog, the Allip, the fearsome Dullahan, the Corpse Flower, even the iconic Beholder.īut, of all these great monsters, there is one that impressed me more than any other with the sheer elegance and flexibility of its design: let me introduce you to the work of art that is Iggwilv, the Witch Queen. Luckily, there are also many gems that are an absolute pleasure to run. Simple bags of hp and attacks with nothing to make them mechanically unique.
